Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die:
Into the valley of Death,
Rode the six hundred.

These lines from Alfred Lord Tennyson’s famous poem, The Charge of the Light Brigade, swirl around In Stephen Massicotte’s elegant play of first love, the fragility of life, and the complications of war a young couple meet by chance during a thunderstorm in an old horse barn in rural Canada. She is a transplant from England. He is off to fight for the Canadian Cavalry Brigade at the dawn of WW1. What follows is a love story that blurs reality and dreams. Jumping over time as memory does, we imagine horses and open fields, the trenches of war and letters home, and relationships that live on in our hearts and minds. Young hearts and more experienced ones alike will recognize the bravery and bitter-sweetness of this journey.

This story demands what we do best here at NCTC: imaginative, theatrical staging, connection within all of us of what it means to be human, and stirring, intimate, honest storytelling.
