Gregory Award-winning playwright Rachel Atkins brings the unbelievably true epic failure of Ardeo Theatre Project to the stage with Voyage for Madmen February 20 to March 7, 2015 at West of Lenin in Fremont. Voyage for Madmen is directed by Susanna Burney and supported by The 14/48 Projects through their Partner Project program.

Local audiences might remember Ardeo Theatre Project: the Seattle theatre company that bought a château, moved to France to do theatre, and then crashed and burned spectacularly in 2001. Incorporating live music, vaudeville, The Tempest, Frankenstein, and the true story of Donald Crowhurst, a British amateur sailor who falsified his records in an attempt to win a round-the-world race in the 1960’s, Voyage for Madmen goes beyond documentary facts to delve into the wild world of start-ups and creative risk at all costs, while highlighting many of the strange-but-true details of backstage life at Ardeo.

“The additional stories in Voyage for Madmen are significant not only because they mirror many of the tragic events of Ardeo, but also because they were, ironically, the plays the company actually rehearsed in France.” says Atkins. “And as one of Ardeo’s founding members, I’ve got all the dirt on what really happened while we were there.”

Joining Atkins and Burney are actors John Bianchi, Alyson Scadron Branner, Nick Edwards, Brandon Felker, Andre Nelson, and Erin Stewart.

Voyage for Madmen is supported by grants from Artist Trust, 4Culture and the Mayor’s Office of Arts and Culture smART ventures program.
